Jaisalmer town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone and is crowned by the ancient Jaisalmer Fort. This fort contains a royal palace and several ornate Jain temples. the main attraction of the city is the Jaisalmer Fort which is the primary reason for calling it the golden city. Everything from the bottom of the fort walls to the hill ranging it looks like golden sand color. It stands on the elevation of golden yellowish sandstone.

1. Jaisalmer Fort


The Jaisalmer Fort also goes by the name Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) of Rajasthan. It was constructed by Raja Jaisal, Rajput ruler in the year 1156 AD. It ranks amongst the largest forts in the world. The fort is constructed in the classic style of the royals by local craftsmen.

Jaisalmer Fort is no different to this phenomenon. Owned by the Bhati clan, the fort was constructed back in 1156 and continues to stand tall as one of the oldest and largest forts in the world! The blend of excellent Islamic and Rajput architecture will blow your mind!.

2. Patwon-Ki-Haveli



Among the largest and the most elaborately carved havelis in Jaisalmer, this five-storey structure sits proudly in a narrow street. It was built by a famous trader named Guman Chand and his sons. The large corridors and the decorated walls are excellent representations of the art form that prevailed. The entire construction is made of yellow sandstone.

 it is recognised as the first haveli to have been erected in the golden city of Jaisalmer. So you can imagine how beautiful and bountiful of old-world charm the haveli has. Commissioned by Guman Chand Patwa, it took him over 50 years to complete the haveli's construction. While the haveli has lost some of its early glory, a few paintings and mirror work art can still be seen on the inside walls. 

Out of the five havelis, one is converted into a museum. The third haveli houses the works of local craftsmen of the bygone era.

3. Bada Bagh Temple



Bada Bagh, also called Barabagh is a garden complex located about six kilometers north of Jaisalmer, This garden complex houses chhatris or royal cenotaphs of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer state, including that of Jai Singh II. The location of the garden is such that it offers wonderful sunset vistas to tourists.  Maharawal Jait Singh’s period saw its construction, which was in the beginning of 16th century. His son Lunakaran completed the construction after the death of his father. The garden served as a memorial where the nobles and their families were cremated. The garden offers a stunning view. 

 If you visit the place during sunrise and sunset, you are guaranteed of beautiful moments, which you cannot avoid capturing.

4. Sam Sand Dunes (Desert National Park)



The Desert National Park displays the best of the Thar desert’s ecosystem and its varied wildlife. The Park is formed of undulating sand dunes, jagged rocks, dense salt lake bottoms and inter-medial areas. This is one of the largest national parks, covering an area of 3162 km². Sam Sand Dunes is the ideal location to set off for the Desert Safari. Desert festival is organized in the months of February and March. If you are around this time, you would not want to miss the folk dances, camel races and other cultural events conducted here.

Various species of animals such as black buck, chinkara and desert fox inhabit the

Park. The highly endangered Great Indian Bustard, one of the world's heaviest flying birds, can also be seen here.

5. Jain Temples



The Jain Temples located inside the Jaisalmer Fort date back to the 12th and 15th centuries. The group of Jain Temples is a fine example of Dilwara style of architecture that uses yellow sandstone. The temples are dedicated to Rikhabdevji and Shambhavdevji, famous Jain hermits known as 'Tirthankars' .  These Jain temples of Jaisalmer are architectural wonders in their own right, a fact which makes for a compelling visit.
